Flower: ~~White Carnation~~ After a disastrous first day at the manor, John has changed his flower to the forget-me-not.

Dislikes: Recitals, concerts, church, things that defy his expectations

History: John was born in New York City. His father, Benjamin Van Straten, made his money with the Van Straten Brewery, but made his reputation in the rough and tumble world of New York City politics. Ben Van Straten is currently an alderman, and has used his position to secure his son a spot on one of the city's volunteer fire companies.

As a member of the company, John is expected to fight rival companies over the pumps, lend his muscle during elections (should it be necessary to fight the supporters of another candidate at the polls, which it always is), and, on the rare occasion, actually put out a fire.

After a youth of private tutelage, John attended Yale (then known as Yale College), where he excelled in receiving disciplinary reports, mostly for gambling and general rowdiness. While John's father is himself a rough man, he is determined that his family at least maintain the image of gentility, which is why he sent John to college in the first place.

John is a little tan, owing to his love of outdoor activities. He is very frank and somewhat coarse by society standards.
